Phase Overview
Phase 1 establishes the foundation for all other layers. You'll learn to extract expert methodologies, convert them into paint-by-numbers frameworks, validate quality through GOLDEN+SHARP scoring, and generate multi-format outputs ready for distribution.
By the end of Phase 1, you'll have created 3 validated playbooks (ValidationHub, Brad Newsletter Growth, Noah Second Brain) with:
- Complete paint-by-numbers framework (8-12 actionable steps)
- GOLDEN+SHARP scores of 4+ on all criteria
- Multi-format outputs (PDF, HTML, interactive workbook)
- Email gate placement markers at Step 3-4
- Trial embed markers at Step 7
- Metadata prepared for Phase 2 distribution
Quick Action Buttons
Step 1: Expert Extraction
Extract the expert's methodology through systematic research and analysis. This is the foundation—get this right and everything else flows naturally.
-
Identify Expert Source MaterialsWhat to find:
- YouTube videos (look for framework explanations, not promotional content)
- Blog posts on their personal site
- Podcasts where they're interviewed (high signal-to-noise)
- Twitter threads with methodology breakdowns
- Case studies showing their process
Tools: YouTube transcripts (via yt-dlp or YouTube's UI), Fireflies for podcast transcription, Notion web clipper for blog posts
-
Extract Core FrameworksLook for repeated patterns across multiple sources. Experts typically have 1-3 core frameworks they reference consistently.
Questions to answer:
- What's the step-by-step process they teach?
- What tools/templates do they recommend?
- What mistakes do they warn against?
- What metrics do they track for success?
- What's their unique insight vs. conventional wisdom?
-
Identify Target Audience & Pain PointsWho is this expert serving?
- Brad Himel → Newsletter operators with 5K-50K subscribers
- Noah Brier → Knowledge workers drowning in information
- ValidationHub → Entrepreneurs needing market validation
What pain are they solving? Be specific—"I want to grow my newsletter" is too vague. "I have 10K subscribers but 2% open rate and no monetization path" is better.
-
Document Voice & Language PatternsNote how the expert communicates:
- Do they use analogies? ("Newsletter growth is like compound interest...")
- Do they have signature phrases? ("Ship before you're ready")
- Are they technical or conversational?
- Do they use frameworks/acronyms? ("LIFT model", "3-2-1 method")
You'll borrow this voice when writing the playbook to maintain authenticity.
- Don't: Copy promotional sales pages—they hype, not teach
- Don't: Rely on single source—methodologies evolve, get multiple data points
- Don't: Skip the "why"—understanding rationale prevents surface-level playbooks
- Don't: Ignore implementation details—"just do X" isn't paint-by-numbers
Distill research into structured methodology. This is where art meets science.
Step 2: Framework Building
Convert extracted methodology into actionable paint-by-numbers steps. Each step must be execution-ready without additional context.
Each step follows this exact structure:
Every step must pass:
- Can someone with zero context execute this step?
- Are there concrete examples (not abstract concepts)?
- Is success measurable or observable?
- Does it flow logically from the previous step?
- Would Jason MacDonald approve this level of rigor?
Step 3-4 is where you insert the email gate. This is critical for Phase 3 capture layer.
Why Step 3-4?
- Steps 1-2 provide genuine value (builds trust)
- Step 3 is where they realize "this actually works"
- Step 4 onward contains the advanced methodology
- Early enough to capture interested users, late enough to qualify serious ones
Step 7 is where you embed the freemium trial. This triggers Phase 4 hand-raise mechanics.
Why Step 7?
- They've completed most of the playbook (high investment)
- They understand the methodology (context-aware trial usage)
- They're about to take action (perfect moment for "what if" questions)
- Late enough that only serious users reach here
Step 3: Quality Validation
Every playbook must score 4+ on all GOLDEN+SHARP criteria. This is non-negotiable—quality is the moat.
Rate each letter 1-5. Must achieve 4+ on ALL letters to publish.
❌ 1-2: Generic advice, no operator voice
✅ 4-5: Laser-targeted to specific audience pain with authentic voice
❌ 1-2: Derivative content
✅ 4-5: Breakthrough angle or unique implementation
❌ 1-2: Linear effort
✅ 4-5: Asymmetric force multiplier
❌ 1-2: Vague direction
✅ 4-5: Unambiguous next step
❌ 1-2: Below average
✅ 4-5: Domain expert level
❌ 1-2: No real impact
✅ 4-5: Unlocks major advancement
- Run through 5-phase adversarial challenge (from :2hat system)
- Score honestly—4 is "good enough to ship", 5 is "world-class"
- If any letter scores <4, rewrite that aspect before proceeding
- Document scores in playbook metadata for Phase 6 analytics
Impact and timing validation. Must achieve 4+ on ALL letters.
❌ 1-2: High effort/low return
✅ 4-5: Massive asymmetric leverage
❌ 1-2: Obvious insight
✅ 4-5: "Wait, what?" reaction
❌ 1-2: Theoretical help
✅ 4-5: Instant transformation
❌ 1-2: Outdated relevance
✅ 4-5: Perfect market timing
❌ 1-2: Wrong timing
✅ 4-5: Optimal market window
Step 4: Output Generation
Generate multi-format outputs for different distribution channels. Each format serves a specific purpose.
Use Case: Email attachments, direct downloads, Reddit/HN sharing
Recommended: React-PDF or Puppeteer
- Professional formatting with consistent spacing
- Table of contents with page numbers
- Expert attribution and branding
- Clickable table of contents (internal links)
- Footer with MasteryMade branding + playbook version
Use Case: SEO landing pages, blog posts, email courses
Recommended: React + Next.js (SEO optimization)
- Responsive design (mobile-first)
- Email gate component at Step 3-4
- Trial embed component at Step 7
- UTM tracking on all external links
- Schema.org markup for SEO
- Social share metadata (Open Graph, Twitter Cards)
Use Case: High-engagement version with fillable fields and progress tracking
- Notion template with checkboxes for each step
- Fillable fields for user inputs
- Embedded video walkthroughs (if available)
- Progress tracker showing completion %
- Link to HTML version for reference
Notion doesn't support forms natively. Solution:
- Add text at Step 3: "To continue, get Steps 4-7 at [link to HTML version with email gate]"
- Or embed Tally/Typeform at Step 3-4
